Vineyard stays in wine country

Sip and sleep among the vines.

Sitting on the patio on a Sunday afternoon, a glass of pinot noir at your elbow, you drink in the view of autumn color in the vineyards. You’re considering buying a bottle of this fine wine, or maybe a whole case. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you might even be pondering a career change; “winemaker” has a nice ring to it. The last thing you’re thinking about is leaving this lovely spot, this perfect afternoon, this memory-making moment. Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to? While not every vineyard in Oregon has the facilities to let you stay the night and weigh your inspired thinking, some do. These fine Oregon wineries invite you to kick back and stay awhile.

Rogue Valley

Troon Vineyard, a Biodynamic and organic-certified vineyard in the Applegate Valley, offers a luxury stay in their three-bedroom, two-bath cottage in the vineyard. If you’re curious about this style of winemaking, there’s no better place to explore. All of their wines are fermented only with native yeasts, without any commercial yeasts, acids, sugar, enzymes or additives.

Also in the Applegate Valley, Plaisance Ranch offers one-night stays in their rustic, French-style gîte — a detached, private bedroom between the tasting room, barn and their newest vineyard block. The room is perfect for couples and includes coffee, tea and pastries in the morning. It’s a good thing steak pairs perfectly with Pinot: Since 1858, the property has been a working ranch, raising certified organic, 100% grass-fed and free-range beef cattle. Bring home a few bottles and some fresh beef to prepare for dinner.

Foris Wine, in Cave Junction, rents out stays at their 100-year-old farmhouse, called the Maple Ranch Johnson House. With five bedrooms, the private two-story home sleeps 12, and includes stunning views of the Klamath Range. Besides wine tasting, it’s perfect for outdoor-lovers, with easy access to hiking, biking, birding, horseback riding, rafting and more.

The original farm house on the Weisinger Family Winery property has been part of the estate since the early 1900s, and offers all of the comforts of home. The Cottage includes a fully equipped kitchen complimentary bottle of wine and local cheese basket, complimentary wine tasting and wine purchase discount, barbecue and hot tub — all just steps away from the Pinot noir vineyard. Sorry, no children or pets are allowed.

Umpqua Valley

The guest cottage at Delfino Vineyards is a quiet retreat set on a 160-acre farm and vineyard. Enjoy a bottle of Tempranillo upon your arrival and settle in for a relaxing stay. Choose from a breakfast basket delivered to your room or a pantry-style breakfast prepared to order. Take in views of the Callahan Ridge Mountains, soak in the hot tub and plan your exploration of Umpqua Valley wine country.

Just over two hours west of Crater Lake National Park, you can indulge in a stay at the Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards Carriage House in Roseburg. The two-bedroom, two-bath home is furnished with French antiques and amenities including a large gym, complimentary bottle of wine and charcuterie plate as well as complimentary wine tasting. Stroll the vineyards and the gardens, picnic at the pond and catch the sunset.

Willamette Valley

Two unique options await at Durant at Red Ridge Farms, in Dayton. You can book a stay in the fully furnished one-bedroom pied-á-terre, or small home, includes a full kitchen and two balconies with spectacular views overlooking the vineyard, olive grove and lavender field. For even more space, the two-bedroom Stonycrest Cottage is situated among the vines, with a view of Mt. Hood from the veranda.

Wine Country Farm in Dayton gives a warm welcome with its 1910 estate house. With sweeping views of the valley and the Dundee Hills, this working vineyard and Arabian horse farm is the perfect setting for a wedding or a romantic getaway. Stroll the gardens, take a horseback ride through the vineyards and enjoy wines from the second-oldest planting in the Red Hills of Dundee.

Also in the Dundee Hills near Dayton, Stoller Family Estate, home to the largest contiguous vineyard in the Willamette Valley, offers a newly renovated, three-bedroom, two-bathroom farmhouse just a stone’s throw from the tasting room and the first LEED Gold-certified winery in the world. Walk through the vineyards and enjoy a taste of estate-grown Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Syrah and more.

With five luxurious suites and three comfortable rooms, the spacious inn at Youngberg Hill Vineyards & Inn in McMinnville can set the stage for a quiet escape. Gourmet breakfast, in-room fireplaces and complimentary wine tastings accompany every reservation. Take in the beauty of the Coast Range from the expansive deck. The organic Pinot noir, Pinot gris and Pinot blanc produced here are LIVE and Salmon Safe-certified.

At Abbey Road Farm in Carlton, you can stay inside completely renovated former grain silos that have been meticulously detailed. Breakfast comes from the onsite chef, wine comes from the onsite vineyards, and character comes from the site itself.
